Hardware Documentation
On my best workdays, I spend all day creating training materials or writing technical instructions. I like puzzles and that's probably why I like creating technical material. I enjoy the process of gathering and filtering information, and then deciding which pieces to share and in what order. It's a puzzle.
I also apply an element of "story" as I develop new training. Whether I launch a new eLearning or deliver classroom training, I apply puzzle-solving and storytelling skills to my work.
Hardware Documentation
Service technicians relied on these step-by-step instructions to replace a key part in the company's radiation treatment systems.
Troubleshooting documentation is among the most difficult to write. In a complex system, the source of the trouble could be hundreds of issues. I purposely chose not to use a flowchart for this document; it would imply that all or most of the potential causes were presented when, in fact, we knew only a subset of them.
Following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), this company asked me to create step-by-step instructions and integrate a method for the assemblers to record their progress as they completed each series of steps. I developed a 220-page assembly manual in nine weeks, designing the layout, interviewing subject-matter experts, and taking hundreds of photos. The full manual includes step-by-step instructions, and three appendices that contain cable-assembly specifications, the bill of materials,...
Software Documentation
I worked with graphic designers from the Marketing team to produce this customer-facing brochure to outline the procedures for accessing our company's internal business software. Since the audience was our customers and the instructions were few, I wanted to produce an approachable brochure rather than a manual.
To help users quickly navigate new screens and fields, I reduced text, increased graphics, and respresented all steps with numbered callouts.
This highly technical guide documents genetic-testing software for researchers. I worked closely with subject matter experts to ensure complete and accurate instructions.
Training Materials and eLearning
Trainees would stumble out of our 2-hour products training bleary-eyed from information overload. So we converted the content to a series of short animated explainer videos using Powtoon software. I developed the storyboard to help my teammate generate an engaging video.
In this script for an animated explainer video, I used branching to help the learner explore several different Medicare-related products.
In this storyboard, I wrote the script and gathered the graphics for an eLearning to help those staff who wished to return to the workplace during the Covid-19 pandemic. I recorded the audio as well.
Customer Service trainees used this workbook independently or in the classroom to learn how to help customers access and analyze one of multiple drug formularies.
